Ludovic SMITH – Product Manager for Admixtures at MAPEI France. With over 25 years of expertise in concrete—and more specifically in admixtures, which are additives used to modify the properties of concrete—MAPEI offers innovative solutions. The globally recognized Italian group is committed to developing increasingly high-performance products that meet evolving construction standards, while minimizing environmental impact. Always in pursuit of innovation, a collaboration with Constructions-3D naturally took shape.

Combining expertise in admixture formulation on one side and 3D concrete printing technology on the other, MAPEI France partnered with Constructions-3D to develop concrete specifically adapted for 3D printing. The goal: to create high-performance, stable, scalable inks compatible with 3D concrete printers.
This collaboration was sparked by a specific challenge in ink formulation raised by Estelle Hynek, PhD in Civil Engineering, who works on developing specialized mortars for 3D printing and on quality control of materials produced by Termix 3D, Constructions-3D’s in-house factory.
This major technological step caught the attention of MAPEI France, which saw an opportunity to explore new application fields, address demanding challenges—such as rheology, stability, and setting time—and push its own boundaries by working with new players in the market. It marked a first for MAPEI France, which had previously collaborated with a company specializing in printed urban furniture, but never in the field of full-scale 3D concrete building construction.
The teams exchanged insights, blended their expertise, and sparked new ideas.
For Ludovic Smith, Product Manager at MAPEI France, the challenge was significant. 3D concrete printing comes with many constraints and standards that the teams had to address. Unlike traditional mixes, concrete designed for 3D printing—referred to as ink—must be extruded without formwork, with each layer supporting the next. It’s a reactive, evolving material that needs to adapt in real time.
The ink must maintain a stable consistency, retain its shape, and develop strength instantly in a controlled manner. In 3D concrete printing, there’s no form removal—everything happens immediately. To develop a custom admixture that meets these requirements, the company mobilized its full internal expertise and R&D resources.
Alexis Tranchant, R&D Manager for admixtures, and Lucile Marlin, Technical Support Manager for concrete admixtures, played a key role in the development of the Termix-3D material by guiding the technical decisions behind the project. Ready-mix concrete, high-performance mortars, grinding agents—each component was carefully evaluated to deliver a solution tailored to the specific needs of 3D printing.
Once the initial formulation was established, the Constructions-3D team stepped in to stabilize it and ensure reliable print performance. Real-time testing was conducted to maximize efficiency and quickly share results with both teams.
For Ludovic, “Regular discussions with the Constructions-3D teams allowed us to align our efforts around a shared goal: to design a high-performance, stable, easy-to-print 3D ink that meets real-world constraints. This collaborative work has been a true driver of innovation, combining chemical expertise, field feedback, and a shared commitment to supporting a new way of building.” The key to a lasting partnership, he says, lies in strong communication between teams.
Beyond the technical performance of the project, Termix-3D also reflects the eco-conscious commitment of both MAPEI and Constructions-3D. By using low-impact binders, this material offers a sustainable solution aligned with today’s environmental challenges, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of construction sites.
This collaboration didn’t stop with the development of the Termix-3D material. MAPEI supports its clients through a dedicated sales and technical team, along with two mobile laboratories operating across the country. These labs can go directly to job sites for diagnostics or testing. As Ludovic points out, “This on-site presence allows us to stay responsive, adjust our solutions when needed, and support the long-term growth of our clients’ projects.”
MAPEI’s promise, #closebyyourside, has never been more meaningful. Beyond this collaboration with Constructions-3D, it opened the door for MAPEI to discover a new sector and explore its full potential—speed, waste reduction, improved working conditions, and architectural form optimization.
Admixtures have long played a key role in enhancing concrete performance, and that role is evolving rapidly with the rise of new techniques like 3D printing. These advances pave the way for even more specialized, technical, and sustainable formulations. The future holds the promise of developing even higher-performing inks.
“For MAPEI, this is an entry into a promising new market where we have full legitimacy to support stakeholders thanks to our expertise in formulation and innovation,” warns the product manager. This technological breakthrough is a promise both for the industry and the environment. Its potential for growth is huge. The short- to long-term challenge is to develop solutions with lower environmental impact while continually improving speed, performance, and quality in execution.
The development of the Termix-3D material allowed MAPEI and Constructions-3D to build a trusting relationship based on listening, dialogue, and responsiveness. This collaboration was a real opportunity. Both teams shared their expertise and worked together toward the same goal: delivering a custom, high-quality material.
For Ludovic: “Working with an innovative player like Constructions-3D enriches our daily work by pushing us to stay agile and curious. It’s a true co-construction dynamic. Beyond the technical aspects, it’s a shared journey built on listening, mutual adaptation, and a strong desire to succeed together. In short, this project has been a source of pride, curiosity, and learning for the entire team.”
To anyone ready to embark on the journey of 3D concrete printing—don’t hesitate! Innovation comes from boldness, open-mindedness, and experimentation. Collective intelligence is the best way to tackle the challenges ahead.
